Dr. Eric Sweeney

The cathedral has a long and developing musical heritage. It is blessed with a very committed robed choir that sings every Sunday of the year under the direction of Musical Director and

Organist Dr. Eric Sweeney. He writes:

Over the past year the musical structure of the choir has been formalized as follows –

Organist and Choirmaster – Dr Eric Sweeney

Assistant Choir Director – Brian Brown

Assistant Organist – Cecelia Keogh

Organ Scholar – Emma Galloway

Vicar Choral – Dermot Murray

During the year the choir continued to provide a sung Eucharist on the first and fourth Sunday of each month as well as an anthem on the first, second and fourth Sundays. On each of these Sundays there is also a concluding organ voluntary. Music provision for the third Sunday is by the Trinity Gospel Choir.

On the rare occasions when there is a fifth Sunday in the month the choir sing Morning Prayer in the traditional form with an Introit, sung responses, canticles, anthem and Psalm.

In addition to these regular duties the choir participated in a number of extra events, most recently in singing movements from Rachmaninov’s Vespers, in Russian, on Good Friday with the movements alternating with readings of the Passion story. Two days later on Easter Sunday they sang Schubert’s Mass in G at a special festive Eucharist and, as an anthem, the Easter Hymn from the opera Cavalleria Rusticana by Mascagni. In  May they will join with the cathedral choirs of Kilkenny and Limerick for a ‘Three Choirs’ Concert’ in St Mary’s cathedral, Limerick. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the choir for their loyal support and hard work throughout the year. Eric Sweeney Organist and Choirmaster

The choir would welcome new members of all types of voices and religious persuasions. If you are interested in ‘trying out’ the choir without making a commitment please contact me at the cathedral email.

Christ Church Cathedral Choir

Trinity Gospel

When the two John Robert’s Cathedrals were twinned in January 2014, it was agreed to celebrate the past but also to proclaim the future of faith in the city. With that in mind, the Twin Cathedral Gospel Choir was founded under the direction of Ms. Colette McInerney. Colette is joined by Mr. Jay Shanahan, accompanist.  TRINITY GOSPEL CHOIR 2016

Trinity sing at the cathedral every third Sunday and then proceed to sing at the mass in the Roman Catholic Cathedral on Barronstrand St at noon.  Members of the choir come from all Christian backgrounds and proclaim their worship and faith in the joy of song.

Whilst the Church Services are our main focus and commitment , we enjoy an involvement with many charitable organisations in the City

During the past year events have included :

  • White Ribbon service in remembrance of those affected by suicide (with Mick Hanley)
  • Whitfield Memorial service to remember those lost to cancer
  • Focus Ireland concert in aid of the homeless (with Eleanor McEvoy)
  • St Patrick’s Hospital out – reach
  • AdVic concert in aid of those affected by homicide. We were able to purchase a sound system for use in both Cathedrals as a result of a Sponsored  Walk by members.

We are eagerly anticipating our first RTE Service on Sunday , which will be aired live on the 5th of June.

We would like to express our thanks to Dean Maria and the congregation of Christ Church Cathedral for their encouragement and support.  Colette McInerney.

The choir has received seed funding from the Church of Ireland Priorities Committee.
