Pillar From The

Medieval Cathedral

The present Georgian Cathedral is built upon the ruins of a Medieval Cathedral built by the Normans in 1210.

During the late 1700's, this building fell into disrepair. Rather than trying to restore and repair the building the corporation and congregation of the time wanted a new bright and airy Cathedral, more in keeping with the fashion for neo-classical architecture which was very much in vogue at the time. The Bishop had to be persuaded to agree and it was demolished in 1773 to make way for the current Georgian building; rubble from the old structure was used extensively in the construction of the present building.

Some of the foundations of the medieval Cathedral still remain under the floor. One of these pillars has been exposed for viewing in the Ante-Chapel of the Church.
